ModulTone

About

A producer, building the tools he needed.

ModulTone is Ivo Janssen — a pop producer, mixer, and synth player, producing tools the same way he produces records: on real sessions, against real problems. Not a company in the traditional sense. Just someone who kept hitting the same wall and decided to build a way through it.

The wall was width. I needed my mixes bigger in the stereo field, quickly, and I couldn't find plugins that got me there without ten extra steps. Most widening tools either did nothing you could actually hear or fell apart the moment I checked the mix in mono. Most saturators and compressors treated the whole stereo file as one signal, which meant whatever they did to the sides, they did to the center too — the vocal, the kick, the parts that need to stay exactly where they are.

So I started building the tools I actually wanted on my own sessions. MS Widener came first — free, because it's basically the plugin I wished existed before I could afford to be picky about it. The rest followed the same rule: mid and side are treated as what they actually are, two different signals, with their own controls, not one knob doing a rough average of both.

Everything here got built and tested against real mixes I was actually working on, not test tones in isolation — because real mixes are what I was trying to fix in the first place.
